My Journey to #SHRM18

About two years ago on a Wednesday evening, while scrolling Twitter, I came across a blog, where a group of people were talking about recruitment using the hashtag #Nextchat, I found the questions really interesting and I decided to respond to a few using the same tag. To my surprise, I got a response from some of the panelists, and they agreed with my views. I also read through some of the responses and learnt that these were all Human Resources professionals, engaged in dialogue about our industry.

The chat ended about thirty minutes later, and I decided to follow the account that hosted it, SHRMNextchat. I definitely wanted to catch it the next time it took place.

At first, I did not realise that it happened every Wednesday evening, but was lucky enough to catch it sporadically. I think it was after a fun filled chat with Tim Sackett that I decided to really get into it. That particular evening the responses made me laugh, I thought to myself, this is a bunch of crazy HR pros and they are just here to vent about all things that go wrong at work, they get together to share their experiences and learn how to deal with situations that could drive one insane.

I loved the fact that most of the people spoke about how much they loved HR, and how we should always remember that we serve all employees within organisations, and how we are all custodians of Human Capital. I just loved it. It felt like a movement, a revolution of some sort. Great energy, positive vibrations, serious topics, yet a lot of fun.

That evening I picked up that, the Society of Human Resource Management was the world’s largest professional association of #HR pros based in the United States of America, and that #SHRMNextchat was created and produced by Mary Kaylor, I followed all their accounts and set a weekly reminder to participate. It was then that I decided to pledge my allegiance to such a worthy cause. I knew then, from the few chats I had followed that there was a lot to learn, and luckily Twitter is free from my cell phone provider, so the only investment I needed to give, was an hour a week.

As I decided to take #Nextchat seriously, the platform decided to take me seriously by following me back. I received so much encouragement from the likes of Steve Brown, Victorio Milian, Kelly Marinelli and many other global participants from India, Nigeria, Australia and the UK.

In the following months, I started to prepare as much as possible from the questions that are posted normally on a Monday evening. I realised that our South African HR practices were not far off from global standards. I spent time chatting to my colleagues and friends in HR, and told them about #Nextchat, they follow but don’t really participate much. That didn’t stop me though, I was learning so much, I was actually making reference to some of the things I had learnt from #Nextchat at work. This platform has honestly ignited more passion about a career that I stumbled upon 12 years ago. I have evolved so much in HR, and have become a member of SHRM because I believe that my life will benefit from this global network.

This year, I am blessed to attend the annual conference in Chicago as an official #SHRM18Blogger. I am so excited to meet everyone that I have spoken to and respect from the field. I am currently scanning the programme to plan which sessions I am going to attend. Please bear with me HR Jazzy, Tamara Rasberry, Dr. Melanie Peacock (to mention a few) if I run up to you and give you big hugs. It’s truly an honor to be part of such a phenomenal #HRTribe. This is a global platform hosted by SHRM that has people from all facets of HR sharing ideas, knowledge and learning on the specific topic chosen for the week. This June, I will be speaking at the annual conference #SHRM19 which is being held in Las Vegas.
